All three focal lengths work for full-length portraits, it just depends on the look you want. The wide-angle will show a lot more of the environment, have more distortion, and will have a higher depth of field. The more telephoto you go, the more shallow the depth field there will be which means you’ll usually have more bokeh, making the portrait more about the subject and less about the environment.
Understanding Focal Length to Get the Best Results
The focal length you choose to shoot not only affects the look but the feel and approach of your photography. To illustrate the difference, shot Nikkor lenses –a wide-angle 24mm, standard 50mm, and a telephoto 105mm.
