Kodak Portra 800 (also known as Ektacolor Pro 800) is a C-41 color negative film and the fastest option in the Portra lineup. The difference in naming comes down to distribution – Portra is distributed by Kodak Alaris, while Ektacolor Pro 800 is distributed by Eastman Kodak. Both are the exact same emulsion, manufactured by Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York. It is also the oldest of the Portra/Ektacolor family and is still based on Kodak’s Vision3 technology, which gives it a bit more character compared to the newer emulsions.

With an ISO of 800, Portra 800 is ideal for low-light situations, indoor shooting, and evening scenes, while still performing well in daylight when properly exposed. It offers more saturation and slightly higher contrast than Portra 160 and Portra 400, along with warm, natural tones that make it especially appealing for portraits and lifestyle photography.

Grain is more noticeable than the other films in the lineup, but it remains very pleasing and well-controlled for an 800 speed film. When exposed well, it still delivers relatively fine grain, especially considering its speed, with a textured, organic look that adds depth and character to images.

Portra 800 also has very good exposure latitude, particularly when overexposed, allowing it to maintain highlight detail while still producing strong, usable results in a variety of lighting conditions.

Here at The Darkroom, we develop, scan, and print Portra 800 regularly, and it continues to deliver rich color, beautiful tones, and consistent results. While it’s a bit more expensive and often saved for special occasions rather than everyday use, it’s a standout film when you need both speed and character.

If you’re looking for a high-ISO color negative film with more contrast, more saturation, and a bit more personality, Kodak Portra 800 is an excellent choice.

Great Warm Colors & Grain

I don’t usually use high speed film but Portra 800 is really something else.

The grain is there but it does not take anything away from the image, if anything it adds to it.

I know Portra 400 is considered “the gold standard”, but man I love Portra 800. I’m a huge junkie for the versatility and grain of higher speed films, and this film delivers on those. If you want to keep your colors fairly neutral and get some more lowlight usage, give this one a try.
