Lucky Color 200 is a C-41 color negative film and a newly introduced 200 ISO emulsion produced in China. While it’s not as widely available in the U.S. as other films, we’ve been seeing a steady amount come through the lab at The Darkroom, where we develop, scan, and print it regularly. From what we’ve seen so far, it offers a unique alternative within the 200 speed color film category.
Lucky 200 delivers a distinct look that sets it apart from more common options like Kodak Gold 200 or Kodak ColorPlus 200, while still remaining more subtle and controlled than films like Phoenix 200 or OptiColor 200. It leans slightly more contrasty overall, with warm tones and occasional magenta shifts, giving it a somewhat vintage, character-driven feel.
One of the more noticeable traits of Lucky 200 is how much its look can shift depending on lighting conditions. In bright, sunny light, colors feel stronger and more defined, with punchier contrast and a pleasing warmth. In overcast or flatter lighting, it can produce more muted or subdued tones, sometimes leaning a bit muddy compared to higher latitude films.
Exposure latitude is more limited compared to films like Gold 200 or Portra 160, so it benefits from more careful metering. Highlights can take on a slightly glowy, brighter character, especially in fog or diffused light, while shadows can fall off more quickly if underexposed.
Grain is medium and sharpness is right in line with what you’d expect from a 200 ISO film. It’s not as fine or refined as Portra 160, but it maintains a balanced texture that complements its overall look.
Here at The Darkroom, Lucky 200 has been a fun and interesting film to run through the lab. It’s not as neutral or forgiving as some of the more established 200 speed films, but that’s part of what makes it stand out. It offers a slightly different rendering that can add character to everyday scenes.
If you’re looking for a 200 speed color negative film that feels a bit different from the usual options – something with a unique color response, moderate grain, and a look that shifts with the light – Lucky Color 200 is definitely worth trying.
