Disposable cameras have been around for decades, and for good reason. They’re simple, affordable, and fun. No menus, no settings, no stress – just point and shoot. The Darkroom Cam is our take on the classic single-use disposable camera, built using an upcycled camera body and loaded with fresh Kodak 400, 27-exposure color negative film. At just $15.99, it’s currently cheaper than any new disposable camera available, making it one of the best value options you’ll find at this price point.
What Is the Darkroom Cam?
The Darkroom Cam is a up-cycled FujiFilm QuickSnap-style body that’s compact, lightweight, and smaller than most other disposable cameras on the market. We chose this style specifically because of its manual flash switch, which allows you to turn the flash on and leave it on when needed.
Each Darkroom Cam is loaded with Kodak 400 ISO color negative film (27 exposures), a versatile film stock that works well in a variety of lighting conditions and delivers the standard disposable camera look.
One of the most common issues we see at The Darkroom is underexposure because the flash wasn’t used. Anytime you’re not in bright sunlight, you should flip up the flash switch and leave it on. Make sure the flash is fully charged – you’ll see a red indicator light when it’s ready – and keep your subject within roughly 4 to 8 feet for the best results. Do that, and you’ll consistently get solid, properly exposed images.

How Development Works
When you’re finished shooting, simply scan the QR code on the back of the camera, go to TheDarkroom.com, or use our mobile app to start your order. You can include your Darkroom Cam alongside any other 35mm or 120 film in the same order, just like a normal development order.
Once you place your order, you can either print a postage paid shipping label or use the provided free postage paid film mailer. Place your camera/film and order form in the mailer, drop it in the mailbox, and the rest is up to us.
When your camera arrives at our lab, we’ll send you an email confirmation. You’ll receive another email once your scans are uploaded to your personal account, where you can view them at thedarkroom.com or in our mobile app. From there, you can edit, download, share, order prints, and archive your photos. We’ll send one final email when your order ships back to you.
And if you’d like, you can select the option to have a new Darkroom Cam sent back with your order so you’re ready to keep shooting.
Better Than Drugstore Disposable Camera Development
Many people bring disposable cameras to drugstore development labs like Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens because it feels convenient. But convenience doesn’t always mean better quality or faster turnaround.
Drugstore disposable camera development often means limited scan sizes, no real print customization, no negative return options, slow processing times, and inconsistent results. At The Darkroom, film is all we do. We develop, scan, and print hundreds of disposable cameras every week in our own lab – not through a third-party processor.
We offer multiple scan size options, true photographic prints, always return your negatives, and provide fast turnaround with dedicated customer support. If you’re going to shoot a disposable camera, it makes sense to develop it at a professional film lab that specializes in disposable camera processing every single day.

How to Get the Best Results from a Single Use Camera
Disposable cameras are perfect for travel, beach days, backpacking, camping, weddings, parties, and any situation where you don’t want to worry about damaging expensive gear. They’re simple, affordable, and easy to pass around, which makes them great for vacations, events, and even kids or first time film shooters.
To get the best results, remember that disposable cameras are fixed for daylight exposure, typically around f/10 at 1/125th of a second, and have a fixed focu for 4 feet to infinity, with the sweet spot around 4 to 8 feet. Keeping your subject within that range will give you the best sharpness and exposure.
Flash is critical anytime you’re not in bright daylight. Indoors, at night, in shade, or in backlit situations, you should use the flash or your photos will likely be underexposed. When using flash, keep your subject roughly 4 to 8 feet away for the best results. Keep it simple, use flash when needed, and disposable cameras will deliver the classic film look people love.

Join the Film Community
Here at The Darkroom, we’re not just a traditional dip and dunk film lab – we’re part of a thriving film photography community. We develop and scan hundreds of disposable cameras every single week, along with even more 35mm and 120 film. Every camera and roll we process is handled in-house and responsibly recycled. Film isn’t a side service for us. It’s what we do every day.
For many photographers, a disposable camera is the starting point. That first roll often leads to a dedicated point and shoot, an SLR, or even a rangefinder once they want more control and sharper results. If you’re thinking about taking that next step, be sure to check out our Film 101 blog where we break down beginner-friendly cameras, film stocks, and simple ways to grow in film photography.
