Ilford FP4 Plus 125 – Fine Grain with Classic Character

Ilford FP4 Plus 125 is a classic black and white film known for its beautifully fine yet still noticeable grain, striking the perfect balance between sharpness and character. Unlike ultra-smooth films like Ilford Delta 100 or Kodak T-MAX 100, which can sometimes look almost too clean, FP4 maintains that timeless analog texture that film photographers love.

Essentially the fine grain counterpart to Ilford HP5 Plus 400, FP4 offers medium contrast, smooth tonal transitions, and excellent exposure latitude, making it one of the most dependable films for a wide variety of lighting conditions. It’s ideal for daylight shooting, portraits, and landscapes, where detail and tonality really shine.

At The Darkroom Lab, FP4 Plus is one of our favorite slower-speed black and white films to develop and shoot. It scans beautifully, has plenty of flexibility in post, and delivers a crisp, clean look while still feeling unmistakably film.

If you’re looking for fine grain, great dynamic range, and classic film character, Ilford FP4 Plus 125 is a film that consistently delivers.

I ran a roll of this film through in Olympus OM-10. Results were good and grain is very pleasing. I did not do any exposure compensation I just stuck with the aperture priority.

This film is a good deal (cheaper than most other Ilford and Kodak B&W films) and is a great option for a slower speed film. 35mm version has noticeable but pleasing grain. In 120 the grain is hardly noticeable when exposed properly. It has beautiful tones and good contrast at box speed.
